We want to give a positive vibe on our show, but that doesn't mean there aren't things in life and sports that boil us. That's why we have a segment and a blog called, "What's Boiling Bryce?" Send us your ideas on what boils you...and get it off your chest!

Running up the Score

This topic not only makes me laugh, but it also makes me boil. The idea that one team is running up the score and shouldn't be doing so, is a joke. We know Herm Edwards says "you play to win the game" and obviously that's the goal, but if you have the chance to blow them out too then you do it. What boils me is when teams and fans complain that the other team is unsportsmanlike because they kept scoring even when they are up by a significant amount. So let me ask, should the winning team just stop playing defense so the other team scores and make it interesting? Well that's absurd. Or should the winning team just stop playing hard?

The Dallas Cowboys whined when they lost to the Vikings in the PLAYOFFS!! Are you kidding me? You are a professional football team and you BLEW IT! What an embarrassment. I'm sorry the Vikings dominated you and I'm sorry it seemed like they were running up the score. They realized it was the 2nd round of the playoffs and you didn't...so shut your mouth and get ready for next year!

I must admit, it is dumb when a team plays their starters and risk injury when they clearly have the game sealed up. If the backups come in and run the score up...good for them!

You might say, "Bryce I understand running up the score in professional sports is a joke, but high school...come on". This is what I say to you. If there is nothing mentally or physically wrong with either team and they are playing on the same level of competition (high school or college level) then DOMINATE if you can. It boils me when people think teams should ease up and not play hard.

What are we teaching kids? You can still have sportsmanship when you are up by 30. It's actually harder to demonstrate sportsmanship when you are blowing a team out, but it's a good test. It's also a good test for the team losing to see if they will continue to play hard and fight to at least cut into the lead.

I believe both teams should play hard until the end when the clock shows 0:00. Now if a team continues to press in the back court of a basketball game or a team is throwing hail marries...that's a little ridiculous. I think a team should keep playing hard though.

For me personally if I was on the losing end of a blowout I wouldn't be mad at them for being good, I would be mad at myself for being bad!

I will have to save a story for on-air that would add to this argument. It's about when I "played" peewee football and was on the good end of a blowout...you will love it!

Until then...quit complaining about teams running up the score! Tell the losers to play harder!...Okay, I'm done boiling!

Michael Crabtree

I am boiled by the fact that Michael Crabtree, who was drafted 10th overall by the San Francisco 49ers, won’t sign a contract. I can’t comprehend the idea of giving up a whole season because of money. Here is a guy with so much talent and he’s willing to sacrifice a season because he doesn’t think the 49ers are giving him enough money. Let me say this, I don’t think athletes are overpaid. However, I do think rookies are overpaid because they haven’t proved a thing. I understand wanting to get as much money as you can, I really do. But, Crabtree you are being given as much as you are worth right now to the 49ers…so just take the money! You are ruining your name already and you will miss out on a whole year’s salary by sitting out this year. For some reason this doesn’t make sense to me. If it’s your agent being greedy, then tell him to hit the road and go show up to the 49ers practice. The more you wait the less money the 49ers are going to pay you. Eventually they will just cut their losses and give up on you. The 49ers are 2-0 without you so you don’t have much of a case for them needing you. It seems crazy that you would be allowed to reenter the draft next year, but if you do end up doing that I would expect you end up on the Raiders! They will put up with the nonsense. I thought the 49ers got a steal when you fell to them at #10. The fact is though you did fall and you should be paid accordingly. Actually, none of the rookies should make as much as they do their first year. It really is a problem when the highest paid guys on a team have only been there for a year or two. That system needs to change, but that’s another story. Crabtree, you blew it buddy…just go put your pads on and play the sport you are gifted to play.

End of the Half

I was really boiling this weekend when my favorite coach in the world decided to leave three timeouts on the board heading into halftime. Jerry Moore could have used those timeouts to try and score on the final drive of the half, instead you go to the locker room and the timeouts disappear. This has driven me nuts over the years because the Carolina Panthers do the same thing. For some reason, coaches feel like it's safe to just give up a drive and let the clock run out. Do they not understand that each team will end up with a certain number of drives during each game and you are supposed to make the most of each of them. Teams should treat the last 2 minutes of the first half the same as they would the last 2 minutes of the second half. The truth is, you may not get that opportunity at the end of the second half. However, if you have enough time and timeouts on the board there is no reason not to try and score. You may be reading this and saying, "teams do that all the time". They should do it EVERY TIME. What do you really have to lose? You fumble? You throw an interception? Those are clearly the risks, but aren't those the same risks in the 3rd quarter? Coaches...just take advantage of the times you have the ball. Show your fans that you are always trying to score. The attitude, "let's just run out the clock and head to the locker room" is a loser's mentality. I'm more a fan of winning...at least TRYING to win. Coaches should play more MADDEN so they can learn some new tricks. Have you ever played MADDEN and let the clock run out? Absolutely not! So why do it in real life? Your reasoning can't convince me.
