With the fall TV season starting up, I wanted to first recap the summer TV shows I enjoyed. Since the sports world slows down a little bit during the summer, it’s a great time to enjoy some non-sports TV!
The show I absolutely enjoy every week is ABC’s “Shark Tank.” It’s actually going to be new throughout the fall as well. This show is very entertaining because it combines money, attitude, dreams, and talent. It’s a combination of “The Apprentice”, “American Idol”, and the inventor show that was on a couple of summers ago. Every week different entrepreneurs go in front of a board of investors or “sharks” to try and get investment money to take their business to the next level. Some ideas are great and they get the money they were seeking. Other times, the business isn’t that strong and none of the investors are willing to invest their own money. The most compelling TV drama happens when it’s a great business idea and multiple investors want in. They compete with each other to offer the best deal or sometimes even go in together. It’s really interesting to see what businesses intrigue these investors. Sometimes I think a business is interesting or dumb and the investors will think the opposite of me.
Of course you have the mean “judge” and then a nicer “judge”, plus three investors that don’t have as large of a presence on the show. Sometimes the people that come on the show to pitch their business get eaten alive by the “sharks” and other times the “sharks” eat them up in a good way! It’s basically reality TV, but not as much cheesiness as a lot of the other shows. It’s a sophisticated show because a lot of money is involved! I found myself yelling at the TV a lot. It held me over until football season began!
30 Rock-Why aren’t we watching?
Since there were times on TV this summer with nothing on, I decided to rent some TV shows on DVD. I found a gem called, “30 Rock,” on NBC. Apparently it doesn’t get great ratings, but it sure does well during the Primetime Emmys. It won best comedy series for the third year in a row. I blew it by not watching this sooner. However, I’m glad I got into it now. Alec Baldwin is absolutely hilarious and his voice just cracks me up as it is. Tina Fey is a wonderful actress who is so likeable and enjoyable to watch. Tracy Morgan is one of my favorites from “Saturday Night Live” and he always has me laughing. They have so many other characters that contribute show after show with smaller roles, but still impact the show greatly. 30 Rock has clever writing and excellent acting. It’s not your typical sitcom, it’s so much more. It’s so unique and interesting. It’s returning in the middle of October with season 4 so check it out, especially if you’re a fan of “Saturday Night Live.”
