Thoughts from the NBA Conference Finals...
-Rajon Rondo has shown once again he's a great player, but is he really a franchise type point guard? Can you build a team around him? He's surrounded by good players and he may even be the best on the team right now...but when the "Big Three" move on...will he still be great? I would still take Deron Williams, Steph Curry, Tyreke Evans, Brandon Jennings, Derrick Rose and Chris Paul before Rondo. I do love Rondo, but not sure if he's a good enough leader or the type of guy that can take over a game night in night, out.
-Kobe Bryant is not too old just yet. He can still take over whenever he wants and he's even shown he can rebound when he has to. It was so cool to see in last night's game Kobe and Fisher "coaching" the team during a timeout. I know they didn't win the game, but it is so valuable to have two players like them. I can't wait to see Kobe get revenge on the Celtics. First he gets to eliminate the Suns after years of losing to them and then he gets an opportunity for vindication against the Celtics.
-It's crazy to think that the guys who were the young stars during the post-Jordan era are now the veterans of the league. KG, Vince Carter, Paul Pierce, Kobe, Ray Allen, and even Grant Hill. The league was "down" right after Michael Jordan left because there weren't enough solid veterans carrying the league, but now the NBA has those veterans as well as great young talent. Even though the playoffs haven't had a ton of close games...the league is still strong with fun players to watch from top to bottom.
-Dwight Howard and Amare Stoudamire are very similar. They both lack the inside moves that could help make them more dominant offensively. The league used to have so many good big men that could score in multiple ways. These two only like and know how to dunk. If they want to lead a team that wins in the NBA Finals, I think they need to watch Pau Gasol and learn some of his offensive moves!
-The league is looking for the next crop of great coaches because Phil Jackson, Larry Brown, Jerry Sloan, Greg Popovich only have so many years left. It's hard for me to believe that Stan Van Gundy will get to that level, but I don't know who else it will be. I like Scott Skiles and Scott Brooks as well as Alvin Gentry, but they have to do it consistently. It's going to be interesting to see if any new young coaches can come in the next couple of years and start turning some heads. My best bet would be on Brian Shaw, Sam Cassell, or Dan Majerle. You also have the retread coaches that will try and prove to people they are legit such as Avery Johnson, Byron Scott, and Sam Mitchell.
-I'm excited to see a Lakers-Celtics rematch. I was rooting for Kobe vs. Lebron, but with the way the Celtics are playing right now...this will be an epic NBA Finals! Go Lakers!
